Mount Kilimanjaro 

The highest mountain in Africa and the pride of Tanzania, and it's highest freestanding mountain of the world and the home to a magnificent national park which is also considered as the seven wonders of Africa. The park offers breathtaking views as well as home to many wild animals which include tree hyrax, grey duiker, bushbuck, red duiker, Cape buffaloes, Elephants, blue monkeys, western black and white colobuses, and leopards.

Kilimanjaro National Park

The park is located near Moshi town and is listed as one of the World Heritage Sites recognized by UNESCO in 1987. The park is one of the compelling beauties of East Africa and one of the world’s most accessible high summits, a beacon for visitors from around the world. Mt. Kilimanjaro it is considered the second most visited national parks in Tanzania which covers an area of 1,688 square Kilometers. 

The national park is counted as the paradise for the birders as there are almost around 150 species of birds that can be spotted. It is estimated that between 35,000 and 50,000 people attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro each year

GETTING THERE

The best way to reach the Kilimanjaro national park

 

By air and the closest airport to fly is Kilimanjaro international airport. Or catch a flight to Kilimanjaro from Dar es Salaam airport, Zanzibar airport or Dar es Salaam international airport, Tanzania.

 

By road from Arusha town, Moshi town, Mkomazi National Park Tanzania or from Kenya via Namanga

Machame Route        

 

7 Days Itinerary            
 

Day 1     Kilimanjaro - Moshi

Pick up from Kilimanjaro airport. Transfer to Moshi or Arusha, early evening pre-climb briefing on the trek

Dinner and overnight stay at Standard Hotel/Lodge (Meals; D, B)

 

Day 2     Arusha/Moshi – Machame

After breakfast transfer to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Machame.

Start the first section of the climb through the mountain forest to Machame Campsite at 10000ft/3000m. Approximate walking time is 5 to 7 hours.

Day 3     Shira Camp

Day 6     Mweka Camp

Day 7     Barafu Camp until the Summit - Hut Mweka

Early we have some tea and cookies and start the hike. The destination is the summit located between the Ratzel and Rembman glaciers. Heading to the north-west, we go up through scree to Stella Point, on the rim of the crater. This is probably the most challenging portion of the hike, both physically and mentally. At the Stella Point (5732 m) we have a short stop to rest, and the sunrise here will likely be the most marvelous you have ever seen, if the weather permits. At the Uhuru Peak (5895 m), we reach the culminant point both of Mt Kilimanjaro and of Africa.

Altitude change: 4600 m to 5895 m (+1295 m) (and down to 3100 m)/Distance: 7 km ascent /23 km descent/Time: 6-8 h ascent /6-7 h descent/ Stone scree, ice-capped summit / Alpine desert.

 

Day 8     Descend to gate

After breakfast descend through to the park gate at Mweka Wildlife College (3 to 4 hrs)

Met and transferred to Kilimanjaro airport for a flight to your beach destination or Back Home

Lemosho Route

 

7 Days Itinerary

 

Day 1 Arusha - Londorossi Gate

Distance:             6 km
Hiking Time:       3-4 hours
Habitat:                Rain Forest

 

After eating breakfast at your hotel, your guide will brief you on the day. You will drive two hours from Arusha (1400m) to Londorossi Park Gate (2100m). In the village near Londorossi where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trailhead, we eat lunch, and then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site.

 

Day 2 Camp (2750m) – Shira 1 Camp (3540m)

Hiking time:        5.5 hours

Habitat:                Moorland

Distance:             8 km

 

We continue on the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is amazing.

 

Day 3     Shira 1 (3540m) – Shira 2 (3840m)- Moir Hut (4114

Hiking time:        5-7 hours

Distance:             Approximately 15 kilometers

Habitat:                moorland

 

This spectacular camp we will be going to today is located beneath the Northern Ice Fields of Kilimanjaro. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

 

Day 4     Moir Hut (4114) - Lava Tower (4600)-Barranco Camp (3950m)

Hiking time:        7 hours

Distance:             Approximately 7 kilometers

Habitat:                Semi Desert

 

From Moir hut, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

 

Day 5    Barranco Camp (3950m) – Karanga Camp –Barafu (15,000 ft.)

Hiking time:        8-10 hours
Distance:             Approximately 9 kilometers
Habitat:                Alpine desert

 

After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. Then, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

 

Day 6     Barafu –Summit(4600m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)

Hiking time:        8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance:             Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
Habitat:                Stone scree and ice-capped summit

 

Your guide will wake you around 23:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt. The route heads northwest and you will ascend over stone scree. During the ascent, many hikers feel that this is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the climb. In about 6 hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685m), located on the crater rim. After enjoying the magnificent sunrise, you will continue ascending for about 2 hours on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime accomplishment! You will be able to spend a short time on the summit taking photographs and drinking tea before the descent to Barafu begins. The hike down to Barafu Camp takes about 3 hours.

At camp, you will rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun. After eating, you will continue descending down to Mweka Hut (3100m). The Mweka Trail will lead you through the scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rain forest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rain forest, so fog and rain should be expected. You will have a dinner, wash, and rest soundly at camp.

 

Day 7     Mweka Camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)

Hiking time:        3 hours
Distance:             Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat:                Forest

 

Following a well-deserved breakfast, your staff will have a big celebration full of dancing and singing. It is here on the mountain that you will present your tips to the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. After celebrating, you will descend for three hours back to Mweka Gate. The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point (5685m) receive green certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.

 

After receiving certificates, you will descend into the Mweka village for 1 hour (3 Kilometers).

You will be served a hot lunch then you will drive back to Airport a flight to Zanzibar or Back home

                               

 

8 Days Itinerary

This is a short hiking day meant for acclimatization. After an early morning breakfast, it is now time to conquer the Great Barranco Wall! Although it may look intimating at first glance, hikers state that this Class 2 hike is usually much easier than they anticipated. At the top of the Wall, you will have a view of Heim Glacier and will be above the clouds. The trail then winds up and down in the Karanga Valley. You will spend the night at Karanga Camp (3950m) and enjoy dinner and washing at the site.

 

Day 6     Karanga Camp (4235m) – Barafu Hut (4600)

Hiking time:        3-4 hours

Distance:             Approximately 4 kilometers

Habitat:                Alpine desert

 

After breakfast, you will begin your ascent. The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the trail used to descend on the final two days. As you continue hiking for an hour, you will reach Barafu Hut. This is the last water stop for the porters because there is no accessible water at Barafu Camp (4550m). The word “barafu” in Swahili means “ice” and this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge. Tents will be exposed to wind and rocks so it is important for hikers to familiarize themselves with the campsite before dark. An early dinner will be served so hikers can rest before attempting the summit the same night. Your guide will brief you in detail on how to prepare for summit night. Get to sleep by 19:00!

 

Day 7     Summit attempt Barafu (4600m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)

Hiking time:        8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance:             Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
Habitat:                Stone scree and ice-capped summit

Day 2     Marangu – Mandara Hut

After breakfast depart for Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Marangu. Start the first section of the climb through the mountain forest to Mandara Hut at 9000ft/ 2750m. Ascend for about 3 to 4 hours.

Day 3     Horombo Hut

Leaving the forest after breakfast, you trek along a good path through open grassy moorland to reach Horombo Hut at 12000ft/3700m. 5 to 7 hours trek. Picnic lunch

Day 4     Kibo Hut

Continue ascending past the last water point traversing the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi to Kibo Hut at 15000ft/4700m. Walking takes approximately 5 to 7 hours.

Day 5     Summit – Horombo 

A very early start for the summit on steep and heavy scree up to Gilman’s point at 18640ft / 5681m till you arrives on the crater rim by sunrise. Day 6                     Descent to gate

After breakfast descend the mountain to the park Gate (5 to 7 hours)

RONGAI ROUTE

 

6 Days Rongai Route

 

Day 1     KILIMANAJRO AIRPORT - RONGAI GATE TO FIRST CAVE'S CAMP

Elevation (m): 1950m to 2600m/ Distance: 8km Time: 4-5 hours/Habitat: Montane Forest

 

Transfer from your hotel to Marangu Gate for registration and then a further transfer to the Rongai trailhead (approx. 2½ hours). Porters prepare and pack supplies and luggage ascent through the village of NaleMoru. The small winding path crosses maize fields before climbing gently through a pine forest until we reach First Cave at 2,600m altitude

 

Day 2 FIRST CAVE TO KIKELEWA CAVE

Elevation (m): 2600m to 3600m/ Distance: 9km, Time: 6 - 7 hours

 

Habitat: Moorland The trail continues up towards Kibo, passing Second Cave (3450m) en-route, and reaching Kikelewa Cave at 3600m. From here the views start to open up and you will see for yourself how huge a mountain Kilimanjaro really is. We overnight at Third Cave Camp (Kikelewa Caves).

 

Day 3 KIKELEWA CAVE TO MAWENZI TARN

Elevation (m): 3600m to 4330m,/Distance: 6km, Time: 4 hours,

 

Habitat: Moorland. A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb all-round views and a tangible sense of wilderness. We leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi.

 

Day 4 MAWENZI TARN TO KIBO CAMPSITE

Elevation (m): 4330m to 4750m/ Distance: 4 km, Time: 3 hours,

 

Habitat: Alpine desert we cross the lunar desert of the 'Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite (4750m) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent tomorrow!

 

Day 5 KIBO CAMPSITE TO SUMMIT TO HOROMBO HUT

Elevation (m): 4750m to 5895m/ Distance: 6 km ascent/16km descent,

 

Time: 6-8 hours ascent/4-5 Hours’ descent Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit. This is where the going really gets tough. The sections of the trail consists of a rocky path, is very steep with much stone scree and is the most demanding section of the route.

 

Day 6 HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE

Elevation (m): 3720m to 1980m / Distance: 20km,/Time: 5-7 hours,

 

Habitat: Moorlands. After breakfast we continue our descent, passing Mandara Hut, down to the Marangu Gate where you will receive your summit certificates.

5 Days Rongai Route

 

Day 1     KILIMANAJRO AIRPORT - RONGAI or NALEMURUTO FIRST CAVE'S CAMP

Elevation (m): 1950m to 2600m/ Distance: 8km Time: 4-5 hours/Habitat: Montane Forest

 

Transfer from your hotel to Marangu Gate for registration and then a further transfer to the Rongai trailhead (approx. 2½ hours). Porters prepare and pack supplies and luggage ascent through the village of NaleMoru. The small winding path crosses maize fields before climbing gently through a pine forest until we reach First Cave at 2,600m altitude

 

Day 2 FIRST CAVE TO KIKELEWA CAVE

Elevation (m): 2600m to 3600m/ Distance: 9km, Time: 6 - 7 hours

 

Habitat: Moorland The trail continues up towards Kibo, passing Second Cave (3450m) en-route, and reaching Kikelewa Cave at 3600m. From here the views start to open up and you will see for yourself how huge a mountain Kilimanjaro really is. We overnight at Third Cave Camp (Kikelewa Caves).

 

Day 3 THIRD CAVES KIBO HUT

Elevation (m): 4330m to 4750m/ Distance: 4 km, Time: 3 hours,

 

Habitat: Alpine desert we cross the lunar desert of the 'Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite (4750m) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent tomorrow!

 

Day 4 KIBO CAMPSITE TO SUMMIT TO HOROMBO HUT

Elevation (m): 4750m to 5895m/ Distance: 6 km ascent/16km descent,

 

Time: 6-8 hours ascent/4-5 Hours’ descent Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit. This is where the going really gets tough. The sections of the trail consists of a rocky path, is very steep with much stone scree and is the most demanding section of the route.

 

Day 5 HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE

Elevation (m): 3720m to 1980m / Distance: 20Km/ Time: 5-7 hours,

 

Habitat: Moorlands. After breakfast we continue our descent, passing Mandara Hut, down to the Marangu Gate where you will receive your summit certificates.

Met your driver and transferred to Kilimanjaro airport for a flight to your beach destination or Back Home

 

Technical climbs

No Technical climbs or adventure activities such as paragliding or skiing are allowed on Mount Kilimanjaro
